The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater completed the four-game series over UW-La Crosse with a doubleheader sweep to finish 4-0 against the Eagles for the first time since the 2022 regular season. Despite the Eagles 21 hits, the Warhawks only allowed one run in Monday's doubleheader.
The Warhawks took game one in extra innings after back-to-back jacks from
Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) &
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) sealed the game in the 11th. Bowers scored the first runs of the game with a three-run homer in the top of the 11th. The next at-bat, Holland hit his own solo shot to put the Warhawks up by four in extras over the Eagles
The Warhawks were held quiet on the offensive end initially. Through six innings,
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) had the only two hits on the Warhawks stat line. The defense and pitching silenced the Eagle offense as well, keeping the game scoreless through the nine regulation innings.
Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) scattered five hits over 5.2 innings of work. In the fourth, the Eagles had runners on the corners with just one out, but Lee forced a weak flyout and groundout to get out of the inning.
Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) recorded the last out of the sixth inning, getting the Warhawks out of another two-runner jam with a looking strikeout. Kirchner pitched the 7th & 8th frames, holding UWL to just a single base runner in the 7th. In the 8th, the Eagles had two singles, but a 643 inning-ending double play kept the game scoreless.
Two singles in the 9th and a single in the 10th for UWL made things interesting, but the Warhawk defense didn't allow the Eagles to walk it off.
In the 11th inning,
Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) beat out a grounder for the Warhawks' first hit since the top of the 6th.
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was hit by a pitch, setting up
Leyten Bowers' (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) three-run homer to give the Warhawks the first runs of the game.
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) added another run of insurance with his own homer to give UWW a 4-0 lead with just three defensive outs remaining.
Benjy Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga./Mount Pisgah) sent the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the 11th to clinch the win for UWW.
In game two, the Warhawks held off the Eagles hitting, only allowing a single run off of 10 UWL hits. The Warhawks scored two runs of their own, on just four hits, on their way to the game two victory.
Ethan Wickman (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) went 6.0 scoreless innings on the mound, scattering five hits. Wickman had bases loaded in the first inning, but forced a ground-out to get out of the early jam.
Wickman's strong pitching allowed the Warhawks to slowly gain their own lead.
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) drew a walk with bases loaded to score the first run of the game in the top of the third. Holland was also responsible for the second run, with his sacrifice fly scoring
Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) to put the Warhawks up 2-0 after five complete.
The Eagles tallied 10 hits, but the defense held them to just one run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Theo Ziedler grabbed the save, pitching the final four outs.
The Warhawks will face UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, April 8th for their next conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
