The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team took two wins over UW-River Falls in the Saturday doubleheader to open up the four-game series. The Warhawks host the Falcons on Prucha Field for the first time since 2002.
The Warhawk pitchers highlighted the day, with both starting shutout outings in the wins. In game one,
Gradin Taschner (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) went 8.0 innings, fanning nine without allowing a single run. In game two,
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) controlled the mound, pitching a complete shutout, only giving up two hits in the win.
Before pitching the shutout in game two,
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) got the Warhawk offense started in the first game. Koenig hit a triple down the right field line to bring around Dominick McVay.
Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) scored Koenig with a sacrifice fly to put the Warhawks up 2-0.
In the third inning,
Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) added another run to give UWW a 3-0 lead.
Taschner worked through the Falcons' order, only allowing five hits in the first 8.0 innings.
Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) came in to pitch the last three outs of the game. The Falcons' brought around their only run of the day in the 9th inning, but Kirchner got the save, protecting the 3-1 lead.
In game two, the Warhawks were held scoreless until the third inning, but were able to take a three-run lead in the bottom of the third.
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) got the scoring started with an RBI single. Then
Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) sent a ball over the right field scoreboard for a two-run homer.
The Warhawks scored the rest of their runs in the 5th, putting up four runs in the frame.
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) tacked on an RBI single, followed by a 2-RBI double from
Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North).
Landen Seymour (Rockton, Ill./Honongah) used his speed to get a triple, scoring Spring in the process as the Warhawks took a 7-0 lead in the 5th.
Koenig continued to work on the mound, giving up a single in the first inning, then didn't allow another Falcon hit until the 8th inning.
In the 8th, the Falcons had a double, but
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) threw the runner out trying to steal third. In the two games, Holland threw out three runners, only allowing a single stolen base.
The Warhawks will finish the four-game series with UW-River Falls tomorrow. The first pitch begins at 12 PM.
