Warhawks Take Two in Wednesday Doubleheader; Win Streak Improves to 26

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team took two games from UW-Oshkosh to complete the regular-season sweep in the WIAC Wednesday doubleheader. 

In game one, the Warhawks put up 9-runs in the 8th inning to run-rule the Titans in 8 innings. In game two, the Warhawk pitching allowed the Warhawks to build an early 7-0 lead. Despite some late UWO runs, the defense closed the door for a 7-5 win. The Warhawks extend their win streak to 26 wins, improving to 19-0 in WIAC play. 

Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) scored the first run for UWW in the second inning. Spring hit a ball that bounced off the top of the outfield fence at Tiedemann Field. Spring reached third for the triple, before getting to take home plate from a balk to put the Warhawks up 1-0. The Warhawks were able to keep the Titans quiet, with Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) pitching the first three innings, spacing out three hits while not allowing a run. Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) added another run with an RBI single in the fourth.

In the 5th, the Warhawks added a crooked number on the board with two RBI singles from both Spring and Dominick McVay, drawing out a pitching change from the Titans. Sam Steuber (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) gave up his only run of the day in the 5th after coming in for relief. Steuber struck out four and picked up the win, pitching the effective relief. 

The Warhawks tacked one more with a sacrifice fly from McVay in the 7th, but the Titans matched it with a run of their own. But the next inning, the Warhawks exploded for nine runs, putting the lead up to 12 in the 8th.

Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) kickstarted the eighth with a two-run homer. McVay picked up his third RBI of the day with a single, followed by Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) cleaning up the bags with a 2-RBI double. Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) scored Hopper with a single, moving Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) over to third. Turner found his way home on a wild pitch before Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) capped the inning with another 2-RBI double. 

With Skyler Sievert (Laguna Niguel, Cal./Dana Hills) entering the game when it was still 5-2, the rightie picked up the save with the final three outs. All nine starters scored a run in the first game, with seven of the nine tallying hits. McVay led the way with a 4-for-4 game & 3 RBIs. 

In game two, the Warhawks didn't waste any time getting on board, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) hit an RBI double and Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) scored him with an RBI single. Just an inning later, Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) hit a three-run long ball to put the Warhawks up 5-0. In the top of the 5th, Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit a RBI double, followed by an RBI triple from Spring to put the Warhawks up 7-0. 

Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) got through 4.1 innings of work before allowing a hit or walk. Kirchner finished out his day, earning the win after 5.0 innings with two Ks and only two hits with no runs.

UW-Oshkosh was able to gather some runs in the 6th inning, rallying four runs to bring the lead to just three. The Titans scored again in the 7th, creating just a two-run game heading into the final 6 outs. 

Nick West (Verona, Wis./Verona) and Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) were able to shut the Titans out in the final inning. West allowed just two base-runners, but got out of the inning with no damage. Koenig picked up the save, retiring the in order--including two strikeouts--in the final frame.

The Warhawks return home for the weekend series against UW-River Falls. During the series, the team will recognize the 2016 World Series squad for its 10-year anniversary. UWW will take on the Falcons beginning at 1 PM on Saturday, April 23rd.
