Whitewater, Wis. - The Warhawks registered a pair of phenomenal wins at the van Steenderen Softball Complex Friday afternoon. UWW walked off the Pointers for a 1-0 win in game one before taking game two 1-0 before weather halted the game.
The opener was a pitcher's duel as the hurlers blanked the opposing offenses until the seventh. The Warhawks threatened in nearly every inning before breaking through in the bottom of the seventh.
Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) smashed a double off the right field wall for a lead off double.
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) drew a pinch hit walk to bring
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) to the plate. The lefty laced a single to right center as Peshia motored around third and touched home for the walkoff win.
Ward and
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) were phenomenal at the plate - each going 3-4 in the batter's box.
In the circle, Hammen won the duel with a fantastic complete game victory. The junior scattered five hits while striking out four to pick up her ninth win of the season.
Game two was more of the same. This time it was Warhawk freshman
Kaitlyn Marsh (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) blanking the Pointers through five while the offense got on the board in the second.
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) reached on a fielder's choice. Eggert laid down a perfect bunt and used her speed to force an errant throw to allow both Warhawks to advance into scoring position.
Rachel Radish (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead) capitalized with a single through the right side that brought in Weidemann for the 1-0 lead.
The UWW defense continued to shutout the UWSP offense into the sixth when the offense looked to break it open. The Warhawks had four runs on the board when a visible lightning strike called an end to the game. With the sixth still in progress, the game reverts back to the end of the fifth for the official 1-0 final.
Eggert paced the Warhawks once again going 2-3 in the batter's box.
Marsh tossed a fantastic game allowing just four hits and striking out three without issuing a walk in the five inning win.
