Softball Splits Thursday Twinbill

Clermont, Fla. -- The UW-Whitewater softball split a pair of games at Hancock Park in the team's fourth day of games in Floriday Thursday. The Warhawks topped Eastern Connecticut State 8-1 before falling to Macalester 6-4.

UWW got on the board in the first inning capitalizing on a ECSU miscue. Grace Grabowy (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) drove a deep fly ball into left center that the center fielder looked to track down, but the ball hit her mitt and dropped. Meanwhile, Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) was cruising around the bases for an early 1-0 lead.

The Warriors tied the game 1-1 on a solo blast in the bottom of the second. The Warhawks responded in a big way in the third. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) led off the frame with a single to left and moved up 60 feet on a sacrifice. An aggressive call on the bases paid off as Weidemann swiped third. Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) followed with an infield single that sparked a run of four base knocks in a row. After three came in, Rachel Radish (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead) singled to right to load the bases and JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took one for the team for the RBI hit-by-pitch. By the end of the inning, UWW reclaimed the lead 5-1.

UW-Whitewater added another run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth for the 8-1 final.

The Warhawks tallied 11 hits in the game with Eggert, Grabowy and Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) all registering two each. Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) went the distance to improve to 4-1 on the season. She struck out six while scattering five hits across the seven inning contest.

Game two was a different story as Macalester pushed five runs across in the first two innings. The Warhawks narrowed the gap with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. A fielding error on the Scots allowed Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) to make it all the way to second. Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) drew a walk and Eggert followed with a single just inside the left field line.

Ward sent a ball deep enough for Koehler to tag up and take off for home. Koehler slid to the outside of the plate and was just able to swipe the plate with her fingertips before the tag was applied for another UWW run. Grabowy singled to center to bring in the final run of the frame.

The Warhawks narrowed the gap to one in the next inning. Radish blasted a one-out triple that sailed to the wall in right field. She came in on Koehler's ground ball in the next at bat.

The Scots led off the top of the sixth with a homerun for the 6-4 final.

Eggert and Grabowy paced the offense with a pair of hits a piece.
