Clermont, Fla. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team celebrated St. Patrick's Day the Warhawk way -- with a doubleheader sweep at Legends Way. UWW topped Wesleyan 5-3 before taking down Wellesley 5-2 in game two of the twinbill.
Wesleyan broke up the pitcher's duel in the top of the fifth with a single run to take the lead. The Warhawks responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on four hits.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) laid down a perfect bunt to get the offense going with a one-out single. With two outs,
Grace Grabowy (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) registered another infield single and
Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) capitalized. The sophomore blasted a shot to right center that rolled to the wall for a double as both Warhawks came in to score. The defense threw home on the play allowing Peshia to break for third and the slide in jarred the ball loose to keep the inning going.
Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) legged out a single to give UWW a 3-1 lead.
Liv Ybarra (Chicago, Ill./Taft) leadoff the sixth with a double to left center to spark a two-run inning.
Erin Grimsley (Itasca, Ill./Montini Catholic) put down a sacrifice bunt before
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) laced a triple to right field to plate one.
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) came up with a pinch hit RBI for the 5-1 lead.
Wesleyan plated two in the top of the seventh, but the Warhawk defense held for the win.
Grabowy,
Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and Ybarra all tallied multiple hits in the game as UWW registered 11 hits in the game.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) tossed a gem allowing a single hit in five innings of work while fanning four for the win.
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) came in for the final two innings to secure the save.
The bats kept rolling in game two as UW-Whitewater got on the board in the top of the first on Grabowy's RBI single up the middle. A Peshia double down the right field line doubled up the Warhawk score in the third for the 2-0 lead.
Wellesley came back with single runs in the third and fourth to knot the game 2-2, but the Warhawks had the response.
In the top of the fifth, Eggert slapped a single to left field to open the frame and moved to second on
Maggie Ward's (Downers Grove, Ill./North) sacrifice. A wild pitch had Eggert 60 feet away before Grabowy drew a walk to put two on. Giese launched a towering shot to left field. Off the bat it looked like a homer but the 35 mile-per-hour wind gusts blew the ball back into the stadium for a two-RBI triple.
UW-Whitewater added another run on a single to right center of Ward's bat for the 5-2 final.
Eggert paced the Warhawk offense going 3-4 with two runs scored.
In the circle,
Kaitlyn Marsh (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) registered her first collegiate start tossing two innings of shutout ball.
Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) picked up the win with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
