The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team got the bats going early against Edgewood College, taking a run-rule victory 13-3 in seven innings. The Warhawks tallied 15 hits, with all nine batters recording at least one hit & five having a multi-hit day.
The Warhawks had the chance on offense first as the designated away team. UWW got two base runners on, but couldn't bring them around in the first three outs.
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) kept the game even, allowing the Eagles only one hit in the first frame.
The Warhawks got the bats moving in the second inning, scoring five runs on five hits.
Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) led off the inning with a single, the first of three hits for the third baseman.
Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) brought Hopper around and then scored himself on a ground-rule double from
Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central).
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) had the RBI on his hard hit ball to first. Despite the two outs, the Warhawks kept the motor going, with
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) hitting back-to-back doubles to put the Warhawks up 5-0 after just an inning & a half.
Koenig put the offense right back on the field with a three-up-three-down inning, striking out two in the second inning. Edgewood bunted a single to get a runner on in the third, but Koenig recorded two more Ks to get out of the inning unscathed.
UW-Whitewater tacked on three more runs in the fourth, beginning with a lead-off walk from
Nelson Phillips IV (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East). After stealing second, Phillips IV was brought home by Thies's second RBI of the day. Olson scored Thies for the 7th run, bringing Edgewood out for the pitching sub. Hopper scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, giving the Warhawks an 8-0 lead.
The Warhawk defense kept Edgewood scoreless, and tacked on another three runs in the 6th inning to take a double-digit lead. Hopper recorded his third hit of the day and second RBI to get the scoring started in the 6th. Hopper came around to score on an error caused by
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) turning his hit into a double.
Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) doubled again to score McVay.
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) pitched his last three outs in the bottom of the 6th, finishing the day with 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing 4 hits from the Eagles.
The Warhawks added extra insurance at the top of the 7th thanks to a two-run homer from
Lincoln Ascher (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine). The Warhawks took the 13-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th.
Edgewood was able to get a spark on offense in what would be the final frame. Two walks and a single in the first four batters loaded the bases with just one out. The Eagles cleared two with another single, and added a third run on a bases-loaded walk. The Warhawks maintained the 13-3 lead, with
Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) grabbing two strikeouts for the final two outs for the run-rule win.
UWW baseball has one day off before their final game in Pensacola. The Warhawks return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 18th against Trinity (CT) College. First pitch is scheduled for 9 am.
