Warhawks Score 6-Runs in 6th for Comeback Win over Sewanee

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated Sewanee University 10-6 for their third straight win. The Warhawks rounded six runs in the bottom of the 6th to secure the comeback over the Tigers.

Sewanee leaped out to an early lead after leading off the game with back-to-back hits. Both runners were cleaned up with a one-out single to cut the Warhawks' work out for them early. UWW was unable to start the momentum in the first inning, with a three-up-three-down in the first.

The second inning was better luck as Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) retired the side in order, notching two strike-outs in the second frame. The offense carried the momentum after Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) reached first off an error. Holland advanced to third after two wild pitches, as Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) brought him in for the Warhawks first run of the game. Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) has a two-out double to bring in McVay and knot the game at 2 after two innings.

The Warhawk offense went a little quiet for the next three innings, only recording one hit over the next nine outs. Sewanee University was able to capitalize on the lull with a two-run inning in both the third & fifth to take a 6-2 lead.

In the 6th inning, it was all the Warhawks. UWW took control of the game, rallying six runs on five hits and an error. Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) got the momentum started with a two-out double to clean up Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) & Holland from the base path. Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) and Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) each brought in a runner during their at-bats, tying the game up at 6-6. Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) put the final touches on the inning with a two RBI double to put the Warhawks up 8-6, their first lead of the game.

Benjy Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga./Mount Pisgah) didn't allow Sewanee to get any momentum, only giving up a walk in the top of the 7th. Tucker had a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning.

UWW tacked on another run after the 7th inning stretch. Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) reached first on an error, then was able to round the bases after a failed pick off went wide. The first baseman's attempt to get Spring at third went long as well, with Spring rounding all of the bases from errors.

Gradin Taschner (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) protected the three-run lead on the mound. Taschner entered the game in the 8th inning, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.

Nelson Phillips IV (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) led off the 8th with a single, allowing Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) to bring him in to put UWW up 10-6 with just three defensive outs remaining.

Taschner finished the Tigers off to earn the save. Sewanee grabbed a lead-off single, but Taschner sent the next three batters down swinging.

Benjy Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga./Mount Pisgah) earned the win on the mound, going 2.2 innings without giving up a hit. Taschner grabbed the save with 2.0 innings of work and 5 strikeouts.

Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point), & Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) each had two RBIs to lead UWW. All nine Warhawks that saw the plate recorded a hit.

The Warhawks will return to the diamond tomorrow for a rematch with Nebraska Wesleyan. Due to the Blue Wahoos schedule, the Warhawks will play the Prairie Wolves at John Melvin College's field in Pace, Florida. The game is set to begin at 10 am.
