Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marino's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Warhawks over Blue Devils

After falling to UW-La Crosse on a near-buzzer beater shot on Wednesday, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team had a buzzer-beater win over UW-Stout on Saturday evening. Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) banked in a shot from the right wing as time expired to lift the Warhawks over the Blue Devils.

Unlike the first meeting between the two teams, where UW-Whitewater led by double digits for a majority of the game, the game in Menomonie was more back and forth.

An early 9-0 run for UW-Stout put the Blue Devils up 12-3 in the first few minutes of the game. The Warhawks were able to chip away, but were unable to flip the score until just a minute left in the half. Luke Bara (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went on a 7-0 run by himself, tying the game then putting the Warhawks up 41-39. Rashad Rogers (Milwaukee, Wis./Alexander Hamilton) hit a free throw with just 25-seconds left to give the Warhawks a one-point advantage heading into halftime.

After the break, the Warhawks got hot, pushing a 19-4 run in the first five minutes to go up by 16 points, taking their biggest lead of the night. Similar to how the Warhawks did in the first half, the Blue Devils slowly chipped away at the lead, until a three-pointer from Stout brought the Warhawk lead back to a singular point with 4:30 left to go.

Stout was able to hit a three-ball and free throws to take the advantage int eh last few minutes. The Warhawks were forced to foul to get the ball back and stop the clock.

Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) snaked through the lane with 12-seconds left to cut the margin to just a single point at 75-76. Stout missed one of their following free throws, giving the Warhawks a chance to tie the game with just a two.

Verges looked for a gap to drive, but the Stout defense collapsed. Verges found Marino, kicking the ball out to the Warhawks' big man. Marino rose and banked in the shot as time expired to give the Warhawks a 78-77 win over the Blue Devils to sweep the regular season series.

Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) lead the team with 20 points, hitting all three of his attempts from behind the arc. Verges and Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) each grabbed 7 rebounds. Marino finished with 11 points, reaching double figures with his buzzer-beater three.

Luk Bara added in 11 points of his own, with Richie Warren (Racine, Wis./Park) scoring 10 and recording a team-high 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Warhawks finished the game shooting 47.2% from the floor (25-for-53) including a 57.1% mark from three (8-for-14). The Warhawks had the slight margin on the glass, outrebounding Stout 39 to 36.

The Warhawks are back in Whitewater for their next game against UW-Platteville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM on Wednesday, February 11th.
