Men's Hoops Down Pioneers by Double Digits

Madson's efficient 27 fuels Warhawks 15-point win

Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team defeated UW-Platteville on Wednesday night WIAC action. The Warhawks maintained a double digit lead nearly the whole game, splitting series with the Pioneers heading into the final few games of the regular season.

The Warhawks set the tone early, scoring the first three baskets of the night to take a 7-0 lead right out of the gate. UW-Whitewater maintained the lead for a bit, but the Pioneers slowly chipped away, tying the game at 14 with just six minutes to go in the half.

UW-Whitewater pulled ahead before the break, ending the first half on a 15-4 run after UW-Platteville tied it up at 14. Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) led the run, scoring 13 of the Warhawks' 15 points in the run.

With an 11-point lead coming out of halftime, Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) set the tone early with a two-handed slam to get the second-half started. The Pioneers got it within eight points right after the 16-minute media, but Rashad Rogers (Milwaukee, Wis./Alexander Hamilton) put the Warhawks back up by double-digits with a three pointer.

The Warhawks would go on to lead by double digits the rest of the way, not letting UW-Platteville any leverage to get back into the game. UWW forced seven turnovers in the second half alone, forcing empty Pioneer possessions on their end of the court.

Madson led the Warhawks with 27-points, only missing two shots all night. Madson was 10-for-12 from the floor (including 3-for-4 from behind the arc) and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Madson also pulled down four rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded three steals.

Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) also had a stellar night, scoring 16 points on 7-for-13 from the floor. Verges led the Warhawks in rebounds (6) and steals (4) and also matched Madson's four assists.

Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) rounded out the scorers with 10 points, securing five rebounds on the night.

The Warhawks shot 48.1% (26-for-54) from the floor  and 35.3% (6-for-17) from three. The Pioneers were held to just 34.0% (18-for-53) and 28% (7-for-20) from three. The Warhawks forced 15 turnovers from the Pioneers, and took care of the ball themselves, only committing eight.

The men head to UW-Eau Claire for their penultimate Saturday of the conference season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 PM at the Sonnentag on Saturday, February 14th.
