Men's Hoops Drop Tight WIAC Battle to Eagles

Warhawks fall after late three-pointer drops for UW-La Crosse

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell to the 23rd-ranked UW-La Crosse in a game that came down to the final buzzer. The Eagles hit a three-pointer with just a second on the clock to come out on top by three, 68-65.

With 13 lead changes and 17 ties, both teams fought back-and-forth all night, neither team gaining a clear advantage after the initial minutes.

After eight minutes of play, UW-La Crosse took the biggest lead of the night at eight-points after a 11-2 run. The Eagles connected on their first three three-point attempts of the night to gain the margin in the early part of the game.

UW-Whitewater put together a run of their own, answering back with their own threes from Kelton McEwen (Bartlett, Ill./St. Francis) and Austin Ambrose (Batavia, Ill./Batavia). The Warhawks were able to take a lead of their own after a 13-1 run put them up 24-20. The run was fueled by their own three-point shooting, with Kelton McEwen (Bartlett, Ill./St. Francis) and Austin Ambrose (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) each knocking down a trey.

The Eagles were able to bring it back to even, but the score stayed within a possession for the rest of the half. The Warhawks had it tied at 34, but UW-La Crosse was able to get three points to enter the break with the advantage.

Coming out of halftime, the Warhawks started to put on their own scoring runs. After the 16-minute media timeout, the Warhawks went on a 7-0 run to draw out an early timeout from the Eagles. The timeout reset the game, with UW-La Crosse slowly chipping away at the lead the Warhawks built up.

With 10:55 on the clock, the Eagles had tied up the game and were starting to go on a run of their own. UW-La Crosse was able to extend the margin to five, their largest lead in the second half with just 4-minutes remaining.

The Warhawks kept fighting tying the game with 2:30 left with a Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) triple. UWW was able to force back to back misses from the Eagles, but weren't able to find the advantage in their frontcourt to take the lead.

After starting the second half 0-for-7 from behind the arc, the Eagles were able to connect on the one they needed, making a three-pointer with just 1.5 seconds on the clock.

UWW was unable to get a clean look off at the buzzer, falling to the Eagles and splitting the conference series.

Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Warhawks in both points and rebounds. Madson finished with 19 points and 9 boards with Verges tallying 18 points and 8 rebounds. Verges also had a team-high four assists and two steals.

The Warhawks won the rebound margin 35-29, but UW-La Cross had the advantage from the stripe, converting on 23-of-34 attempts compared to UWW's 17-of-22.

The Warhawks will look to bounce back on the road against UW-Stout. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM up in Menomonie.
