UWW Drops Contest at Trinity on Walk-Off

The #1/1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team fell to #9/6 Trinity University on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers scored all six of their runs in the final three innings to take the 6-5 win and take the four-game series.

Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) got the bats going for the Warhawks with a lead-off single to start the game. Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) got on next with a walk, but both of them were picked off to give the Tigers two early outs & erase early momentum for the Warhawks.

Trinity was able to get a lead-off hit in the bottom of the first, but the Warhawks took the runner off with a double play to keep the Tigers off the board.

UWW was retired in order for the next two innings. Trinity was able to get runners on in their frames, but the Warhawks were able to leave them stranded, with the game still scoreless after the first three.

Theo Zeidler (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) had the start on the mound, going the first three innings with six strikeouts, only allowing two hits and no runs.

In the top of the 4th, the Warhawks loaded the bases with just one out, setting up Nelson Phillips (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) to send a runner in on a fielder's choice error. Cade Honkamp (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) gave the Warhawks a 3-0 lead with a two-RBI single to move the runners forward.

Skyler Sievert (Laguna Niguel, Cal./Dana Hills) came to the mound in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Tigers down in order. The next inning, Trinity had two singles to start the frame, but Sievert had three backwards K's in a row to strand the two runners.

Wyatt Jensen (Luck, Wis./Luck) added another run at the top of the 6th, scoring Phillips from third on a RBI ground-out. The Warhawks held a 4-0 lead heading into the final three innings after Sievert allowed just a single base hit in the 6th.

Trinity was able to add two runs after the seventh-inning stretch to cut the deficit to just two. A 2-RBI single with bases loaded cut the Warhawks lead to just 4-2.

Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) added cushion for the Warhawks, scoring Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 8th. After the inning flipped, Trinity was able to get the runners moving with back-to-back singles. The Tigers tied up the game with a sacrifice fly and wild pitch score.

The Warhawks were able to get two runners on, advancing them to second & third, but neither reached home in the top of the ninth to get a go-ahead run. Trinity was able to get their first runner on in the bottom of the ninth, setting up a hit-and-run walk-off to take the 6-5 victory.

Offensively, the Warhawks were led by Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) & Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), each having two hits and a run scored. Honkamp had two RBIs, with Nelson, Jensen, and McVay each having one.

The Warhawks will return to the diamond on March 10th to begin their annual Spring Trip to Pensacola, Florida. UWW takes on Nebraska Wesleyan at 10 AM on the 10th.
