Warhawks Drop Two in Doubleheader with Trinity

Will Finish 4-game series tomorrow morning against the #9 Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #1/1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team fell to #9/6 Trinity University in a doubleheader on the second day of the series. The Tigers got off to a hot start in game one, pulling out a 12-1 win. The second game was back-&-forth, but Trinity was able to grab the decisive run in the bottom of the 8th.

In the top of the first, the Warhawks got two runners on thanks to two Tiger errors, but both were stranded. The Tigers would draw the first run across in the bottom of the frame with a lead off double, with the lead-off coming around to put Trinity up 1-0.

Both teams went three-up-three-down in the second inning, but the Warhawks put on another base-runner with a two-out error by the defense. Unable to move the runner, the Warhawks were left without a run still after two-&-a-half.

Trinity made their move over the next two innings, scoring four in the bottom of the third and six in the bottom of the fifth. In the two innings, Trinity tallied seven hits and two errors to score their 10 runs.

The Warhawks would have just one base runner until the top of the 7th when Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) had the first hit of the game for UWW. Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) brought McVay around for the Warhawk run, but Trinity got out of the inning with a double play to keep the 11-1 lead.

The Tigers had one more run on a sacrifice in the bottom of the 8th inning to get the 12-1 victory.

In game two, the Warhawks had a better start offensively, with Any Thies hitting a double in the first inning, but it was Trinity who struck first again with three runs in the bottom of the second.

The Warhawks were able to chip away at the lead with a two-run inning in the fourth. Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) lead off the inning with a single, with Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) drawing a walk to get two runners aboard. McVay juiced the bases with a single, and Spring brought putting the ball in play for a RBI fielder's choice. Wyatt Jensen (Luck, Wis./Luck) had a two-out single to bring home one more to bring the Warhawks within just one run.

Trinity gave themselves another cushion at the bottom of the frame with a bases-loaded walk to put them up 4-2.

The Warhawks cut it backdown in the fifth with a Leyton Bowers RBI single. A three-up-three-down inning in the bottom of the frame gave the Warhawks momentum to tie the game in the top of the 6th. Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) sent a double down the left field line after coming into pinch hit. Olson then reached third & eventually home on back-to-back wild pitches to tie the game at 4-4.

The Tigers were able to hold the Warhawks off the base path in the final three frames, and collected the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th with a sacrifice fly.

The Warhawks finished with nine hits in game two. Three of those hits came from Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles), as he went 3-for-4 from the plate.

The Warhawks will finish out the series against Trinity tomorrow morning. First pitch is scheduled for 9 AM.
