Warhawk Women Fall to Pointers

Whitewater, Wis. -- The No. 14 UW-Whitewater women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to UW-Stevens Point 66-63 in Kachel Gym Wednesday.

The back-and-forth contest featured 19 lead changes and 17 ties with the game coming down to the wire. After an even first half, the Pointers took the lead heading into the fourth by just one, 47-48.

The Warhawks responded with back-to-back buckets to open the fourth and reclaim the lead. The advantage quickly swung back to UWSP as the Pointers put together a five-point run to take a 51-53 lead at the 6:25 mark. On UWW's ensuing possession, Brooke Stenklyft (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge) got the ball on the left block with her back to the basket. She backed down the defender and spun to the middle of the paint for a scoop shot on the left side - powering through blanket defense - that banked in as the referee whistled the foul. The freshman hit the free throw for an old fashioned three-point play to put the Warhawks up 54-53.

UW-Stevens Point hit a pull up jumper to sway the advantage back to their side and the Pointers held the lead for nearly four minutes. A Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) jumper tied the game 58-58 with 2:12 remaining, but a couple of trips to the free throw line in the final minute saw UWSP take a 60-65 lead with less than 20 seconds remaining.

The Warhawks inbounded after the made free throw and Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) knocked down a huge triple with six seconds to go to cut the lead to two, 63-65. A quick foul sent the Pointers back to the line with four seconds left. The guard hit the back end of the pair to push the gap to three and UWW's last second heave was caromed off the rim for the final.

Four Warhawks registered double digits in the score column led by 14 each from Stenklyft and Gillis. Ashley Schlabowske (Grayslake, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and Logan Lowry (Appleton, Wis./East) each tallied 11. On the glass, Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) paced UWW with eight rebounds while McCurdy dished out six assists and had three steals.

UW-Whitewater will wrap up the regular season at UW-River Falls on Saturday. UW-Oshkosh has secured the regular season conference title while three teams share second - UW-Platteville, UW-La Crosse and UWW - with an 8-5 league record. UW-River Falls holds fifth with a 7-6 mark in conference play.
