UWW Women defeat UWEC 70-50 on Saturday

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a big win over UW-Eau Claire in Saturday WIAC action. The Warhawks outscored the Blugolds 21-8 in the third quarter to open up the large lead.

The Warhawks started out with the hot hand, pulling out ahead to a 15-3 lead to start the game. The Blugolds were able to score two jumpers to cut the lead to just single digits before the end of the first frame.

The Blugolds carried the momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Warhawks 22-14 in the frame. UWEC tied up the game at 27-27 with just 45 seconds left in the half, but Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) went on her own 4-0 run to keep the Warhawks ahead 31-29 at the break.

Seniors Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) and Logan Lowry (Appleton, Wis./East) were recognized at halftime, celebrating their accomplishments in the four years with the Warhawk Women's Basketball program.

Coming out of the break, the Warhawks started on a 7-0 run to draw out an early timeout from the Blugolds. The Warhawks kept their foot on the gas, pushing the lead past double digits. To end the quarter, Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) connected on a three-pointer to give the Warhawks their biggest lead of the night at 15.

The Warhawks extended the 15-point advantage with a 6-0 run to start the second half. The Blugolds were forced to burn another timeout to reset their squad, but the Warhawks continued on their run, not allowing a Blugold basket for the first four minutes of the frame.

The Warhawks maintained the 20-point margin above UW-Eau Claire in the fourth quarter, securing the 70-50 victory on Senior Night.
