LAKE GENEVA, WI — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to UW-Platteville, 1-0, on Wednesday at Badger High School. UWW put six of its 11 shots on goal and earned five second-half corner kicks, but were held scoreless by the Pioneers in WIAC action.
To start the game, UWW created pressure with a corner in the third minute and
Rachel Cvikel's (Franklin, Wis./Saint Thomas More) shot in the ninth, then
Lauren Ripley (Brookfield, Wis./East) saved Petri's 14th-minute attempt as the Warhawks came through a stretch that included two Platteville corners and multiple shots.
The Pioneers scored in the 29th minute off a set piece header, putting the Warhawks down 1-0.
Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) forced another save less than a minute after the goal, and Ripley added two late saves before
Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) sent a shot wide in the 44th as UWW finished the half trailing 1-0.
The Warhawks opened the second half with a corner kick, Ripley saved Sarah Liljestrand's shot in the 50th minute, and
Anna Gunderson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) put a shot on frame in the 62nd minute.
Brinley Dunsirn (Appleton, Wis./North) added another shot on goal in the 70th minute before Ripley made two more saves in the closing stretch to keep UWW within one.
UWW pressed late while trailing 1-0, earning three corner kicks from 78:14 to 81:16 and getting back-to-back shots on goal from Simkowski that Marguerite Mueller, the Pioneer keeper, saved.
Tessa Czajkowski Higgins (Prairie du Chien, Wis./Prairie du Chien) and Osborn each had late attempts miss wide, and the match ended with UWW falling 1-0.
The Warhawks will look forward to their next WIAC match against UW-Stevens Point, taking on the Pointers on Saturday, October 10th. The match is set to being at 1 PM in Stevens Point.
