Whitewater, Wis. -- The Warhawks fell to UW-Oshkosh 55-43 in a top ten battle in Kachel Gym Wednesday night. UW-Whitewater is ranked ninth in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll and eleventh according to D3hoops.com. The Titans are listed third in the pair of national rankings.
The Warhawks put together a fantastic first half Wednesday. Trailing by three less than two minutes in, UWW's offense got a spark from a
Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) layup off of a
Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) assist at the eight minute mark. From that point, the Warhawks finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a six-point advantage, 13-7. UW-Whitewater shot nearly 43% in the first quarter while the defense held the Titans to just 25% from the floor.
UWW held the lead throughout the second quarter eventually widening the gap to as much as nine, 24-15, with 1:22 on the clock. UWO scored the final four points of the half to send the teams into the locker rooms with the Warhawks leading 24-19. Gillis led all scorers at the break with 10 points on 5-8 from the floor.
Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) was the most active player on the glass, hauling in six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
On the other side of the break, the Titans came out on fire shooting 60% to reclaim the lead. A 23-9 sway for UWO in the third flipped the game to a 42-33 lead for the visitors. UW-Oshkosh held the lead the rest of the way.
Gillis led UWW with 18 points adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. Nies hit double digits with 12 points while also grabbing five boards. Rittmeyer paced the Warhawks on the glass with 11 rebounds while
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) dished out a game-high four assists.
