Box Score La Crosse, Wis. -- The No. 10 UW-Whitewater women's basketball team topped UW-La Crosse 64-47 on the road Wednesday evening. The Eagles are ranked 22nd according to D3hoops.com. Both squads are now 6-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and move into a three-way tie for second with UW-Platteville.
After a tight first half,
Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) knocked down a second chance bucket at the buzzer to send the Warhawks into the locker room with a two point, 27-25, advantage.
On the other side of the intermission, UW-Whitewater was able to break it open with a phenomenal third quarter. The Warhawk defense allowed just eight points in the third including three points in the final six minutes of the quarter. Meanwhile, the offense scored 18 points in the last 3:50 of the period.
Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) hit a pair of three pointers while
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) added a third in the final seconds. The barrage of buckets saw UWW's lead grow to 18 heading into the fourth.
The Warhawks shot 42% from the floor in the contest and hit 16-20 from the charity stripe. The defense held UWL to under 30% from the floor and UWW limited free chances allowing just 12 free throw opportunities for the Eagles.
Gillis paced the UW-Whitewater offense with 16 points on 7-12 from the floor. She added a team-high seven rebounds.
Brooke Stenklyft (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge) posted double digits in the score column with 12 bolstered by 6-9 from the free throw line. McCurdy and Nies dished out five assists each while
Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) swiped five steals.
The Warhawks will host UW-Stout this Saturday for the teams annual Pink Game presented by UW Credit Union with proceeds going toward the Kay Yow Fund. UW-Whitewater will also welcome back and recognize their women's basketball alumni during the game. Tipoff is set for 3 PM in Kachel Gym.
