The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team were trailing by as much as 16 against 20th-ranked UW-Oshkosh at the Kolf Center on Wednesday night, but the Warhawks outscored the Titans by over 20-points in the second half for the comeback victory.
The Warhawks fought closely with the Titans for much of the first half, but UW-Oshkosh started to pull away with a 12-2 run heading into the under-12 media.
Down 31-19, the Warhawks answered back with a run of their own, cutting the Titan lead to just 2 points with just under 6-minutes remaining before the break. The Titans reignited their spark, with a 15-1 run to put the lead back up to double digits.Â
The Warhawks were able to chip away slightly, but entered the break down by 11 at 58-47.Â
UW-Oshkosh made 50% of their threes in the first half, shooting 10-for-20 from behind the arc. The Warhawks shot more efficiently, at 54.5%, but only made six from three-point range.Â
The second half was a much different start for both teams. The Warhawks outscored the Titans 9-2 in the first two minutes of the half, forcing just a two possession game at 60-56. The Titans then hit their only three-pointer of the second half, before going ice cold from behind the arc.
UW-Oshkosh's shooting slump led to a 14-0 run by the Warhawks, ending with a
Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) three-pointer to put the Warhawks up by 5-points in the span of 5-minutes.Â
The Titans managed to close the Warhawk lead to just a single point, but the Warhawks were able to pull away to lead the rest of the game. A lay-up from
Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) gave the Warhawks a double-digit lead with four-minutes on the clock.
UW-Whitewater closed out the game from the free throw-line, maintaining the 10-point lead with free throws. The Warhawks closed the game 12-for-14 from the stripe in the final four-minutes.
The Warhawks surpassed the century mark after an UW-Oshkosh technical foul put
Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) and Madson on the free throw line. Marino and Madson made two each to put the Warhawks above the 100-point mark.
The Warhawks shot over 50% from behind the arc in the second half as well, making 4 threes. UW-Oshkosh made just one of their 11 attempts in the second half.Â
Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) led the Warhawks with 32-points, making five three-pointers. Madson also pulled down five rebounds, dished out two assists, and recorded two steals.
Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) boasted a career-high 23 points, making the most free throws for the Warhawks, going 10-for-12 from the charity stripe. Verges matched Madson with five rebounds.
Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) and
Luke Bara (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) each contributed 15 points, with
Richie Warren (Racine, Wis./Park) adding in 10 points to round out the Warhawk scoring. Marino led the team on the glass, with 8 rebounds.Â
The Warhawks return to action next week in Kachel Gymnasium against UW-La Crosse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM on Wednesday, February 4th.Â
