Eau Claire, Wis. -- The No. 9/11 UW-Whitewater women's basketball team used the free throw line late to seal a road win, 65-48, at UW-Eau Claire Saturday evening.
The Warhawks outscored the Blugolds 15-8 in the fourth quarter -- 11 of those 15 came from the charity stripe. UW-Whitewater also capitalized on miscues scoring 25 points off of 25 Blugold turnovers. The Warhawks allowed just six points off of 13 turnovers in the contest.
Despite the final numbers, it was the charity stripe that had UWEC leading by two after the first ten minutes of action, 8-10.
The Warhawk offense exploded in the second quarter. UWW shot nearly 63% from the floor and hit 3-5 from three-point range to secure a 31-24 advantage by the intermission.
On the other side of the break, the home squad narrowed the gap to one multiple times, but each time UWW responded. The final time the game was within one point - the 4:34 mark in the third - the Warhawks ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to head into the fourth with a ten-point lead, 50-40.
Five Warhawks took trips to the line in the fourth combining for 16 free throws in the final quarter. Meanwhile the UWW defense held the Blugolds to a shooting efficiency under 30% allowing the Warhawks to extend the lead.
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) paced the Warhawk offense with 16 points bolstered by 3-5 from long range and 5-6 from the charity stripe.
Caden Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) tallied 12 points and was a single rebound shy of a double-double.
