Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UWW Leads Buzzer-to-Buzzer in Victory over Stout

Four Warhawks reach double-digit scoring

The Warhawk men's basketball team led the entire game over UW-Stout to pick up their third conference win in a row. Four Warhawks reached double-digit scoring against the Blue Devils.

The Warhawks got out of the gates right away, setting the tone with an old-fashioned three-point play for the first points of the game from Brock Marino (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community). UW-Whitewater maintained the lead in the low-scoring game to start, with a 12-6 advantage at the 12-minute media.

By the under-8, the Warhawks started to get more of their footing on offense, extending out into 22-14 lead. The Warhawks briefly put the lead up to 12, with an emphatic putback dunk from Richie Warren (Racine, Wis./Park) to force a Stout timeout. The Blue Devils got their footing, but the Warhawks were able to keep the the advantage.

Second-chance points kept the Warhawks out in front in the second half, with 12 offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes. UW-Whitewater had 12 points of those opportunities as they entered the break up 34-27.

After the break, back-to-back baskets from Stout put the lead to just five, but the Warhawks answered back with an 8-0 run to put the lead up to 14 points with just over 14-minutes to go. UW-Whitewater never let the lead fall below 10 the rest of the game. UW-Stout managed to closed it to 10-points with 8-minutes to go, but Kelton McEwen (Bartlett, Ill./St. Francis) hit back-to-back threes to help the Warhawks maintain the double-digit margin.

The Warhawks finished out the game on a 7-0 run, to take their largest lead of the night at the final buzzer with a 72-54 victory.

Four Warhawks reached double-figure scoring. Marino led UWW with a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double. Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added 13 points and eight rebounds of his own. Richie Warren (Racine, Wis./Park) added 12 points and seven boards, with Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) rounding out the quartet with 10 points to go with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

As a team, the Warhawks outrebounded Stout 41-27, including a 18-8 margin on the offensive glass. UW-Whitewater also capitalized on the Blue Devil's 19 turnovers, scoring 22 points. The Warhawks committed just 10 turnovers themselves.

The men's team will head out to UW-Platteville for their next game, taking on the 19th-ranked Pioneers on Wednesday, January 21st at 7 PM. The Warhawks return home the following Saturday for a 5 PM match-up with UW-Eau Claire.
