Softball Secures 16th WIAC Title Outright with Sunday Sweep

Menomonie, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team secured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title outright with a sweep at UW-Stout Sunday. The Warhawks took game one 3-1 before capping the regular season with a six-inning 13-3 victory. The conference championship is the 16th in program history and 11th under head coach Brenda Volk

UW-Whitewater will host the WIAC Tournament Friday-Saturday, May 9-10. The single elimination tournament will feature two games Friday and three Saturday. As the top seed, the Warhawks receive a bye and will play the winner of UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse Saturday at 11 AM.

Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) got UWW on the board in the top of the third of game one. After Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, Wickman laced a ball to center for the RBI and a 1-0 lead.

In the next inning, Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) showcased her wheels with a bunt single to leadoff the frame. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) kept UWW alive with two outs with a single to right center. Eggert's liner toward second base had the defender diving and as she hit the ground the ball popped out for a base knock. Meanwhile, Ward cruised around the bases for a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Devils scored their lone run of the game on a first-and-third pickle steal. UWW got the run back in the next half inning. Wickman tagged another single up the middle and moved up 60 feet on JJ Jakosalem's (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) sacrifice bunt. Ward notched a RBI single to center for the 3-1 margin.

UW-Whitewater registered 10 hits in the contest with Eggert, Wickman and Ward all tallying multiple hits in the game.

Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) got the start and the win to improve to 15-1. Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) shutout UW-Stout in the final two innings for her seventh save of the season.

The Warhawks scored early and often in game two - plating four runs in the top of the first, two in the second and two more in the third.

In the top of the sixth, UWW added five to push the run-rule while the defense held in the bottom of the frame for the six inning final.

The Warhawks blasted 15 hits in the nightcap with Eggert, Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community), Weidemann and Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) all posting multiple hits in the contest.

Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and Ava Kostecki (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Township) shared time in the circle with DeBennette picking up the win to move to 8-2 on the season.
