Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team fell in a semifinal of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament held at the van Steenderen Softball Complex Saturday. The Warhawks fell to UW-Platteville 1-0.
The game was a pitchers' duel with just one run crossing home on ten combined hits. The lone run of the game was a solo homer off the bat of Melissa Dietz, the conference's leading hitter, in the fourth inning.
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) provided a defensive highlight for the Warhawks. Right after the fly ball, the next Pioneer batter drove a deep ball to left field. Kohnle read the ball perfectly stretching back over her head to make the catch as she hit the wall.
All four of UWW's hits came from different Warhawks.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) registered an infield hit in her first plate appearance while
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) tagged a single up the middle,
Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) fired a shot to the outfield and
Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) came up with another big hit.
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) suffered just her second loss of the season in the circle. She allowed three hits in four innings of work.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) tossed 1.1 innings of relief before
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) closed out the game for UWW.
The Warhawks will learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show Monday. The show will air live on ncaa.com at 10 AM.
