Heavy Hitting for UWW leads to a Conference Sweep of UWRF

Nine home runs on second day of conference series

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (17-0, 8-0 WIAC) kept on swinging the bats in the second day of their conference series against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (8-9, 3-5). In Game 1, UWW secured a decisive 15-6 victory, while in Game 2, they blasted 6 home runs in only 7 innings for a 23-4 win.

Game 1
UWW picked up right where they left off yesterday with two home runs right off the get-go. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) started with a lead-off solo home run to left center, followed by an Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) two-run homer, giving UWW an early 3-0 lead after just the first inning.

An RBI single by Holland in the second, followed by four more runs in the third gave the Warhawks an 8-0 lead after three complete. Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) and Cootway each had a sacrifice fly, with Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) adding a solo homer. Jackson Spring's (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) triple scored the fourth run of the frame.

The Warhawks were kept scoreless in the fourth, which gave some momentum to the Falcons with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. But a three-run 5th inning put the Warhawks back up by 10 runs.

UW-River Falls managed to add two more over the sixth & seventh innings while keeping the Warhawks off the base path. The Falcons managed to close in under 10 runs, keeping the game going for the full 9 innings.

But the Warhawks used the innings to add four more runs, Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) scored two with a single in the 8th, followed by a double steal run by Wyatt Jensen (Luck, Wis./Luck) and an RBI single by Brett Sommer (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) in the 9th to give the Warhawks the 15-6 victory.

Game 2
It was all the Warhawks in the second game, scoring in every single inning but one.  The Warhawks racked up 23 runs on 21 hits with six home runs.

Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) highlighted a four-run first inning with a 2-RBI single, kick-starting a stellar game from the freshman. Spring finished game two, going 5-for-5 from the plate with 5 RBIs.

Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) & Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) each went yard in the second for a five-run inning, pushing the lead to 9-0.

The Warhawks had a rare no-run third inning, but made up for it with another five-run inning in the fourth. Spring knocked a 2-RBI double, with Holland hitting his second home run (his third of the day).

Daryl Jackson and Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) knocked another two more RBIs. And Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) had his moment, with a pinch-hitter grand slam to give the Warhawks a 20-0 lead after six innings.

The Warhawks weren't done after 20, as Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) sent the ball to left center for another 2-RBI tater. Immediately after Koenig rounded the bases, Olson hit his second four-bagger of the day to put the Warhawks up 23-0.

UW-River Falls managed to score four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer by a pinch hitter. The Falcons were unable to close the near-insurmountable lead to keep the game going though.

Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) started the game for UWW and was given the win on the mound. Lee pitched 4 innings without allowing a run, fanning five batters in the process.

The Warhawks continue their conference season with a home doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh on April 9th. First pitch is set for 1 PM at Prucha Field.
