Oshkosh, Wis. -- The #20 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a twinbill against #11 UW-Oshkosh on the road Wednesday. The Warhawks took the opener 1-0 before falling in the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) got the game going, and the UWW faithful hyped up, with a leadoff bunt single.
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) nearly legged out another bunt, but was still able to move Eggert on the sacrifice.
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) followed with a single to left field to put runners on the corners. In the next at bat, Kostroski baited the throw down to second and got into a pickle. Meanwhile Eggert snuck closer to home before taking off and scoring for a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
That run would prove to be the only one UWW would need as
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) tossed a phenomenal game and the Warhawk defense had her back.
UW-Whitewater allowed just a single Titan to reach second with less than two outs the entire game.
Eggert was a perfect 3-3 at the plate to pace the Warhawk offense. Hammen scattered five hits across seven innings while striking out four. She improved to 9-1 with the complete game victory in the circle.
Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) and
JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) registered hits in game two with Jakosalem scoring for UW-Whitewater in the game.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) suffered the loss in the circle to move to 3-1 on the season.
