Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team split with UW-Eau Claire Saturday at van Steenderen. The Warhawks took the opener 4-1 before falling in the nightcap 3-0.
In game one, the Warhawks plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back base knocks from
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North),
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) drew a walk to load the bases.
Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) took one for the team to score the first run of the contest.
A hit batter led to a second run for UWW in the second.
JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took it as the lead off and advanced to second on a Blugold miscue later in the frame. With two outs, Kostroski singled to left center to bring in Jakosalem for a 2-0 advantage.
UW-Whitewater doubled up in the third. Giese tagged a leadoff single to right center and moved up 60 feet on
Kaitlyn Weidemann's (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) sacrifice bunt.
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) singled through the right side to bring in Giese. Jakosalem laid down to the sacrifice and Kohnle came in to score on another UWEC error.
The Blugolds plated a single run in the top of the sixth for the final run of the contest.
UWW registered six hits - all by different Warhawks. Kostroski, Giese and Kohnle each registered RBI in the game.
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) got the start and the win to improve to 10-1 on the season. She scattered seven hits across 5.1 innings in the circle while striking out two.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) tallied the save - her fourth of the season - with 1.2 innings of relief work. She allowed a single hit while fanning two.
After a scoreless four innings, UWEC took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. The Blugolds added one more on a solo homer in the top of the seventh.
UW-Whitewater tallied six hits bolstered by a pair from Eggert.
Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) took the loss in the circle to move to 7-2 on the season.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) came in for 2.1 innings of relief.
