Warhawks Bounce Back in Game Two of Top-10 Matchup

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team dropped the first game, but bounced back in the second game of the weekend series against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Eagles (19-4, 10-2 WIAC) put together some big innings in the first game, but the Warhawks (19-2, 10-2 WIAC) flipped it in the second game, making for a thrilling doubleheader at Prucha Field.

The Eagles opened game one strong, scoring five runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run homer. The Warhawks were unable to respond, giving 8th-ranked UW-La Crosse the needed momentum for the rest of the game.

In the second inning, UWL extended their lead with a two-run double, quickly putting the Warhwks behind 7-0. The third inning brought a glimmer of hope for UWW, as Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) hit a solo home run to add the first Warhawk run on the board.

The Eagles added three runs to make it 10-1 in the sixth inning, capitalizing on loading the bases without an out. Another two runs for UWL in the seventh shortened the game via run-rule.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater bounced back with an 8-3 victory over UW-La Crosse, highlighted by a five-run fifth inning.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a solo home run, but UWW answered back with a home run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) blasted one to left center, putting the Warhawks up 2-1 after one complete.

After some strong defensive showings from both teams, the Warhawks broke the scoring stall with a five-run fifth inning. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) led off with a double, and then traded places with Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) in the next at-bat. Frank brought in Scolan and Adam Cootway's (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) walk led to Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) hitting a two-RBI double. Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) capped the inning with an RBI double, putting UWW up 7-1 through five innings.

In the sixth, UW-La Crosse closed the gap with a two-run homer, but UWW maintained a 7-3 lead. The Warhawks added another run in the seventh when Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) singled to bring in Cootway, increasing their lead to 8-3. The Warhawk closers kept the Eagles off the base path, securing the win and evening the series.

Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) pitched for 5.2 innings in his win, allowing four hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts. George Hansen (Superior, Wis./Superior) contributed 2.1 innings in relief without allowing a hit, striking out four. Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) closed out the ninth, taking the side down in order.

The top-10 weekend series continues tomorrow, with the doubleheader set to begin at 12 PM.
