Warhawks Complete Sweep of Blugolds to Open WIAC Play

Six More Home Runs for UWW on Friday

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team completed the sweep with two more wins over UW-Eau Claire in the conference opening series. The Warhawks (13-0, 4-0) hit another seven home runs over the two games, bringing the total up to 14 over the four game series against the Blugolds (6-9, 0-4 WIAC),

The first game was slow going in terms of runs, but Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) broke the seal with a ground-rule double to push a runner around in the bottom of the second. Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) followed him an inning later with a RBI double of his own to put the Warhawks up 2-0 after three innings played.

After keeping the Blugolds off the base path, the Warhawks blew open the game with three consecutive four-run innings.

In the fourth, Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) led off with a single to give Daryl Jackson another RBI in his four-bagger. The Warhawks followed Jackson's home run up with four consecutive singles, scoring another two runs to go up 6-0.

In the fifth, Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) hit a two-out single to add another one, and Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) cleaned it up with a 3-RBI home run to put the Warhawks up 10-0.

The sixth started with a solo shot from Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port), and was capped off by Brett Sommer's (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) 3-RBI tater to give the Warhawks a commanding 14-0 lead.

The Blugolds avoid the donut, with a two-run home run in the top of the 7th, but the Warhawks took the win in seven.

The second game went the same, with the Warhawks blasting two more home runs early. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) led off the game with a solo shot with Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) blasting a two-run poke in the second to give the Warhawks an early 3-0 lead.

The Warhawks added four more runs in the third and fourth innings, highlighted by Sam Paden's (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) 2-RBI double, a sacrifice fly from Scolan, and another RBI double for Frank.

The Warhawk defense got out of a few jams throughout the shutout, stranding nine total Blugold baserunners.

Alex Najera (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) capped off the impressive weekend with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give the Warhawks a 9-0 win.

Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) picked up the win in the second game, keeping his sheet clean on the season. Lee tossed 5.0 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

The Warhawks have a non-conference break before taking on UW-River Falls next weekend. UWW baseball will welcome NAIA St. Xavier to Prucha Field on Wednesday, April 2nd.
