Two Run-Rule Wins for the Warhawks on Thursday

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team added another two wins after their day off down in Clermont, Florida. The Warhawks improve to 8-0 on the season with four more games to go in THE Spring Games. 

The Warhawks picked up right where they left off with a 10-1 win over Cortland in only 5 innings. UWW added in four runs in the top of the first. Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) added the first run of the game with a double to right center. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) followed it up with a 2-RBI single, with Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) adding the fourth run on a throwing error. 

UW-Whitewater extended their lead out to 9-0 in the next two innings. Kostroski added another RBI double to start the rally in the second, and Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) highlighted the third with an RBI double of her own. 

Cortland scored their first run of the game in the fourth, but the Warhawks answered back with Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) hitting her first home run of the season. 

Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) was credited with the win in the first game, pitching four innings with only three hits and zero earned runs. 

The second game as a high-scoring affair between the Warhawks and Geneseo. But went in favor of UWW for their second run-rule win of the day.

Geneseo took an early 4-0 lead, but the Warhawks tied it up after getting a rally going in the bottom of the third. Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) led off the inning with a single, followed by three singles straight. 

The Warhawks broke open the game in the next frame, as UWW added five runs in the fourth to go up 9-4. Kostroski started the inning with a two run homer to kickstart the rally.

Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) pushed the lead to six with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Knights answered back this time, grabbing two runs in the top of the 6th, but Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) got the Warhawks out of the jam, setting up the run-rule inning.

Wickman ended the game with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, enforcing the run-rule. 

Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) picked up the win on the mound, with Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) picking up her first save of the season. 

The Warhawks are back out tomorrow, taking on Endicott at 9 AM ET followed by Wellesely, both games are on Legends Way Field.
