Clermont, FL -- The UW-Whitewater softball team registered two wins on Tuesday to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Warhawks took down Fredonia 4-0 before capping the day with an 8-2 win over Salem State.
UWW hit a homerun both ways possible to set the stage Tuesday morning.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) sparked the offense in the top of the third with a hard slap to center field. The centerfielder laid out as the ball bounced under her glove and rolled all the way to the fence while the speedy Eggert cruised around the bases. She rounded third and bolted home for the inside the park homer as the Warhawks streamed out of the dugout in celebration.
After four scoreless following the in-the-parker, UW-Whitewater added three more in the seventh.
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) led off the frame with a single to center. Eggert sacrifice bunted Ward into scoring position and UWW capitalized.
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) stepped into the box and squared up a ball that sailed over the fence in left field - a no-doubter. With two outs and a runner on after a hit-by-pitch,
Keira Jarrett (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) was called in for a pinch hit at bat and she made the most of it. Jarrett tagged a ball to right center, one-hopping the fence for a triple as
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) motored around the bases to score and give UWW a 4-0 lead.
The Warhawk defense held in the bottom of the frame for the win.
UW-Whitewater blasted 11 hits in the contest with Eggert and Giese each registering a pair.
Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief work.
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) tallied the save after fanning four in three innings of no-hit ball in the circle.
UWW kept the bats going in game two. Jarrett brought in the first run of the game on a RBI double to left center in the second.
Liv Ybarra (Chicago, Ill./Taft) pulled the ball down to the right side with a runner on third to bring in
Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and push the lead to 2-0.
Two innings later, Ybarra struck again. This time the powerful lefty blasted a ball nearly hit the wall in right field on the fly. Her two-run triple doubled-up the Warhawk score to make it 4-0 in the fourth.
Belle Lapacek (Downers Grove, Ill./South) followed with a single to the right side of the infield. The first and second baseman went for the ball as the speedster bolted to the empty bag at first allowing Ybarra to score.
Salem State plated a pair of runs in the sixth, but UW-Whitewater responded with three in the bottom of the inning. The Warhawks loaded the bases on singles from
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), Lapacek and Eggert. Kostroski cleared them with a double to center field to extend the gap to 8-2.
UWW tallied 12 hits with Eggert pacing the offense going 3-4 at the plate. Kostroski and Ybarra each registered three RBI.
Karman Rowe (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) picked up a win in her first collegiate start. The freshman struck out eight and allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) came in for the final 1.2 innings of relief.
