The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fought back in a home battle against UW-Oshkosh, but fell late to the Titans, 54-49.
After making the first basket of the game, the Warhawks had a hill to climb as UW-Oshkosh opened on a 14-0 run.
The Warhawks found their spark and closed the gap to just 16-13. Buckets weren't easy to come by in the first half, as both teams wore each other down defensively.
The Titans extended their lead back to double-digits, but the Warhawks hit two baskets before the break. UWW headed to the locker room down 26-19.
Coming out of halftime, the Warhawks didn't let up, making it a close game for the fans in Kachel.
An 8-0 UWW run, fueled by three pointers from
JT Hoytink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) and
Darius Chestnut (Sun Prairie, Wis./West), made it a one-point game with 12-minutes remaining.
UW-Oshkosh kept slightly ahead, but every time they started to pull away, the Warhawks would answer back. UW-Whitewater kept it within 5-points for a majority of the final minutes.
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./) broke a dry spell for both teams with a hook shot with 49 seconds left. Capstran's shot put the Warhawks down by just one point in the final seconds.
The Warhawks were unable to get anything to go late, with UW-Oshkosh securing the win with four free throws.
Capstran led the Warhawks with a career-high 24 points and 7 rebounds.
Chestnut added in 8 points, hitting two threes in the contest.
Joey Berezowitz (Burlington, Wis./) had an all-around stat line of 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./) and
Richie Warren (Racine, Wis./Park) each pulled down 6 rebounds in the contest.
The Warhawks remain at home for their next game, taking on UW-Stout. The Warhawks men's basketball team will honor their hoops Alumni during the game. Tip-off is set for 5:05 PM.
