The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team hosted the 2025 WIAC Wrestling Championship Presented by Culver's with over 150 bouts in the span of eight hours. The Warhawks placed third as a team, scoring a total of 132.5 points.
On the individual side,
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) defended his title, claiming the three-peat of the 133-pound weight class.
The Warhawks had 16 total podium finishers, with one title, three runner-ups, and three third-place finishes.
UW-Whitewater had four total wrestlers reach the championship bout in the final section.
At 125-pound weight class, No. 4 Jalenn Dunson faced off against No. 6 Izzy Balsiger. Dunson recorded a takedown in the first period, going up 3-1 after the first 3-minutes. In the second period, Dunson recorded another takedown and a 2-point nearfall to expand his lead up to 8-3. However, Balsiger closed the gap in the third period, recording a takedown and four-point nearfall to force a sudden-victory period. Balsiger got the needed points, as Dunson took runner-up.

Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) took the gold at the 133-pound weight class, taking a major decision in the championship match. Mallinder recorded six total takedowns in the bout.
The next Warhawk up for a championship was
Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) at the 157-pound weight class. Swan was matched up with No. 4 Tyler Goebel of UW-La Crosse. The two battled for all three-periods, but a late escape from Swan tied things at the end at regulation. Swan fell in the third overtime period in riding-time, taking second in his weight class.
The final Warhawk in a championship bout was
Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) at the 165-pound weight class. Peet defeated No. 4 Tyler Flege from UW-La Crosse in the semifinal match with a 4-3 decision. Peet met Gerber from UWL in the championship match. Peet took runner-up, falling with a 2-0 decision in the championship.
In the third place matches, the Warhawks were featured in eight out of the ten matches.
At the 141-pound weight class,
Evan Onstad (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) lost his opening bout, but recorded three straight technical falls to battle back into the third-place bout. Onstad recorded a fourth technical fall in the championship round.
After falling in his first round bout,
Jalin Conner (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) wrestled-back to the third-place back. Conner matched up against his teammate
Lucio Morgan (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) in the semifinal. Conner took the bout in the sudden victory period after a hard-fought match. Conner then took third-place with a fall in 2:40.
Jermaine Butler (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) made it to the quarter finals before falling to the eventual 157-pound champion. Butler recorded a tech fall to make it to third place match. He carried the momentum forward, taking third place with a 5-1 decision. Butler scored all five points in the third period of the match.
After battling closely with Conner, Morgan won with a fall in 1:58 to take fifth in the 149-pound weight class.
Isaak Smith (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) also claimed fifth in the 285-pound weight class. Smith won with a 7-5 decision, holding off Garth Martell from UW-Oshkosh. Smith scored 6 points in the first period with a takedown and three point nearfall only a minute into the match.
The Warhawks had six other podium finishers on the day.
Luke Berktold (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) placed fourth at the 125-pound weight class. Berktold went 2-2 on the day with a major decision and 1:03 fall.
Ryan Riser (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) placed fourth at the 174-pound weight class. Riser fell in the quarterfinal round to the eventual champion, but battled his way into the third place match. Riser fell in a close 5-4 decision in the third place round.
Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Evan Danowski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) each took 4th in their respective weight classes. Kohel fell in a close 5-3 decision at 184. Danowski fell in the quarterfinals, but took a 10-3 decision to advance into the third place match. Danowski lost on a major decision to take fourth at 184.
Cale Stonitsch (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka), 141 pounds, and
Hunter Coons (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community), 197-pounds, took 6th to round out the podium finishers.
