Warhawks Take Down Pointers on the Road

Stevens Point, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater volleyball team topped UW-Stevens Point 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20) in the team's regular season finale on the road Friday night.

The Warhawk win sets up a rematch between UWW and UWSP for the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament set for Tuesday. As the #4 seed, the Warhawks will host the fifth-seeded Pointers at 7 PM on November 11 in Russell Arena. Starting this fall, the WIAC has implemented pay-per-view for all of its conference championships and conference tournaments. Click here for more information. Fans can still follow each match in the conference tournament via live stats free of charge.

The Pointers came out on fire Friday evening as the offense hit .481 in the opening set to secure the early lead in the match. The Warhawks responded winning each of the next three.

UW-Whitewater mounted a late comeback in set two to even the match. Trailing 20-17, Emily Lego (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) sparked the offense with a kill. The Warhawks scored the next three courtesy of a UWSP miscue, an Emma Bludgen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) kill and a Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) ace to claim the 21-20 advantage. As the set came to a close, Bludgen added another kill while Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) notched a kill and a block to set up set point. After a Pointer point, a service error secured the win.

The Warhawks grabbed and held the lead for most of the third set bolstered by Lego and Gaby DiMotto's (New Berlin, Wis./West) seven combined kills and a pair of blocks from Dix.

With the momentum on their side, UWW built a big lead, 19-12, in set four to set up the victory.

Lego and DiMotto paced the UWW offense from the pins -- DiMotto tallied 12 kills on the outside while Lego added 10 on the right side. Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) posted 36 assists adding five blocks.

Defensively, three Warhawks recorded double digit digs led by Lawton's 20. Dix was a force at the net with eight blocks including two solos in the contest.
