The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to UW-Stevens Point in double overtime of the WIAC Tournament First Round. The Warhawks battled for over 100-minutes, but were unable to withstand the Pointer attack.
The first half was a preview of the even match to come, with both teams having identical stats with five shots & three corners. UW-Stevens Point was slightly more on target, with three shots on goal compared to UWW's two, but
Kara Smith (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) made the saves to keep the scoreboard blank after the first 45 minutes.
After the break, UW-Stevens Point started the offensive, quickly doubling its shot total from the first half. However, the Warhawks were able to use the pressure against the Pointers, scoring off a counter-attack that turned the game in UWW's favor.
Anna Gunderson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) crossed it forward to push the ball to
Rachel Cvikel (Franklin, Wis./Saint Thomas More). Cvikel redirected the pass over to Brooklyn Carlson, who chipped the shot perfectly over the fingers of the keeper for the one-timer goal.
The Warhawks turned defensive, looking to keep the Pointers at bay. But the Pointers pressed their attack even more to stay in the game. A late corner kick would result in the equalizer. The Pointers played the double corner to cross over for the header goal & equalize with less than a minute left.Â
In the first overtime period. Neither team was able to get much offense going, with the ball staying in the midfield. The Warhawks had one push, but the shot by
Rowan Severson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) was blocked by a Pointer defender.Â
The clock reached the century mark, and was still tied at 1-1 for the second overtime period.Â
The Pointers found the decisive goal on another corner in the overtime period, advancing to the semifinal of the WIAC Tournament on the golden goal.Â
