Warhawks Outpaced by Falcons in Top-10 Contest

The 8th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team was unable to keep pace with 9th-ranked UW-River Falls in their Top-10 Saturday match-up in River Falls. The Falcons got out to an early lead, and held the Warhawks in check, only allowing the Warhawks 46 yards on the ground.

The Warhawks started their day with two consecutive three-and-outs, which UW-River Falls scored on both of their following drives to go up 14-0 early in the first quarter. UW-Whitewater was able to march down the field, but missed the field goal to end the first in the 14-point deficit.

The second quarter started a bit more positively, with a 10-play, 62-yard drive for the Warhawks. Tyler Vasey (Crystal Lake, Ill/Prairie Ridge) capped it off with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Justin Klinker to open up the scoring for UWW.

However, UW-River Falls only needed one play on their next two drives, throwing a 75-yard pass then 85-yard pass for two touchdowns. The Falcons added on a field goal right before the end of the half to score 17 unanswered and take a 31-7 halftime lead.

After the break, the Warhawks were able to find the end zone after a 9-play, 61-yard drive. Running back Brian Stanton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) was able to power through a Falcon defensive back to make the catch in the end zone.

The Warhawks stalled offensively after the touchdown, picking up only 63 yards the rest of the game. The Falcons, on the other hand, kept their offense going, scoring 21 more points to put the game out of reach.

Darrick Hill (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) led the Warhawks on the ground with 16-yards rushing in three carries. Klinker threw for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns while picking up 13 yards on the ground himself. Jacques Brooks (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was Klinker's main target, catching 5 passes for 102 yards. Defensively, Ethan Gallagher (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) led the Warhawks with 10 tackles (7 solo, 3 assisted). Kartsen Libby added 8 (6 solo, 2 assisted), three of which were for a loss.

With the 52-14 loss, the Warhawks fell to 3-2 in WIAC play and 6-2 overall. They will return back to Perkins Stadium for their final home game of the regular season on November 8th. UW-Whitewater will face UW-Eau Claire for Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day presented by Wisconsin Army National Guard.
