Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater volleyball team swept Greenville University 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 28-26) in Russell Arena Friday night. The Warhawks honored former player Lisa Panici as part of the team's 12th Annual Dig Panici Night during the match.
The UW-Whitewater offense was efficient in set one hitting .313. The Warhawks capitalized on a 5-0 run late in the set to take a 23-17 lead and eventually the set 25-20.
The Panthers extended their early lead in set two to as much as five, 15-10, but the Warhawks battled back. Trailing 21-19, UWW rattled off four straight to take the lead 22-21.
Emma Bludgen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) bolstered the run with a pair of service aces. Greenville was able to secure the first set point, 24-23, but UW-Whitewater had the response. The Warhawks scored three consecutive - a kill from
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead), an attack error for the Panthers and finally an ace from
Michelyn Hansen (Hillsboro, Wis./Hillsboro) - to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UWW held a four-point lead late in set three, but once again Greenville fought back to force extra points. It was a bit of deja vu as the Panthers held set point, 26-25, when UW-Whitewater tallied three straight. This time it was a kill from
Gaby DiMotto (New Berlin, Wis./West) and back-to-back attack errors that sealed the match.
The Warhawk middles were efficient combining for 23 kills and 5 blocks. Dix led the way with 13 kills on a .545 attack percentage adding three blocks.
Bludgen ended up with a match-high four aces adding 10 digs.
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) dished out 35 assists in the three-setter. In the backcourt,
Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) posted 18 digs.
