The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to UW-Stevens Point 68-57 on the road Wednesday evening.
UW-Whitewater scored the first basket of the game, but the Pointers claimed and held the lead the rest of the way through the first bolstered by an 18-10 advantage on points in the paint. After the first 10 minutes, UWSP held an 18-14 lead.
The Pointers led by as much as 11 in the second, but the Warhawks ended the second on an 8-0 run to pull within three, 33-30, by the intermission. Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) sparked the spurt with a triple before assisting Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) on a big three with under a minute to go. Trautsch tallied the last bucket of the half on a step back jumper from the baseline to send UWW into the locker room with momentum.
A proverbial lid was on the basket for UWW in the third quarter. The Warhawks made just 1-8 from the floor and added a pair of free throws in the 10-minute period. The 16-4 third quarter sway in favor of the home team pushed the margin to 49-34 heading into the fourth.
The Warhawks narrowed the gap back into single digits, 61-53, late in the fourth after a Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) steal led to a Trautsch layup. The Pointers responded and held off the UWW offense for the 68-57 final.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) led UWW with 26 points on 10-18 from the floor including 4-7 from long range. She added six boards, tied for the team high. Trautsch and Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) each added nine points with Trautsch also hauling in six rebounds.
The 11-2 Warhawks return to action Saturday against UW-Stout in Kachel Gym. Tipoff for the team's annual alumni day is set for 3 PM.
