The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team battled back in the third quarter against #23 UW-Stout, but it was all of the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter to defeat the Warhawks, 76-65.
The first quarter bounced back and forth, giving a glimpse of what the game would be like the whole way. UW-Stout stayed just ahead of the Warhawks nearly the entire way, but
Katie Hildebrandt (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) converted two from the line to tie it up at 17 with 8-seconds to go in the frame. UW-Stout would answer back with a buzzer beater three to put them up at the end of the first.
Stout would extend their lead in the second half, staring out the quarter with three straight treys. Another 20-point frame put the Blue Devils up 40-32 at the break.
After the break, the Warhawks didn't go away quietly. They started to slowly chip away at the Blue Devil lead. The Warhawks took the lead with 2-minutes to go in the quarter, but the Blue Devils kept ahead, entering the final quarter up by two.
Stout pulled away in the fourth, outscoring the Warhawks 24-15. The Warhawks bad it within 4-points, but a 7-0 run pushed the lead to double-digits for Stout. The Warhawks had two late threes from
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Maggie Traustch, but the lead was too great in the final two minutes.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) led the Warhawks with 15 points, adding 8 rebounds to her stat line as well. Traustch chipped in 17 points, matching her season-high.
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) and
Katie Hildebrandt (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) each scored 10 points in the contest. Hildebrandt also recorded her own double-double, with 10 rebounds over her 26 minutes.Â
The Warhawks will return home for their next test, facing 4th-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7 pm on January 15th.
