#17 Warhawks Push OT Against #7 UWO

The #17 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team used a massive fourth quarter to push overtime against the seventh-ranked Titans Wednesday night in Kachel but UW-Oshkosh came away with the win 59-52.

After a slow start from both offenses, the Warhawks held a 9-5 lead one quarter into the contest. UW-Oshkosh owned the second and third quarters building a 44-33 lead by the end of the third, but UWW did not fold.

UW-Whitewater dominated the fourth quarter to mount a massive comeback against the unbeaten Titans squad. Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) sparked a run with a jumper with just under seven minutes to go. A Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) layin a minute later cut the lead to 39-47. The Warhawks capitalized on a UWO miscue as Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) hauled in a pass beyond the arc and drained the triple to narrow the gap to 42-47 with five minutes remaining.

The Titans came up empty handed in their possession and UWW took advantage. Gillis crashed the boards with an offensive board and immediately went back up strong for the and-one that pulled the Warhawks within two, 45-47. Two possessions later Mallory Oloffson (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) followed suit with another strong move near the basket. She hit the layup to tie the game 47-47 with 3:08 on the clock.

UW-Oshkosh registered their first point in nearly five minutes with a jumper that reclaimed the lead, but the advantage was short-lived as Carollo found Oloffson wide open under the basket on a nifty pass for an easy bucket -- 49-49 with 2:15 left. The squads traded blocks and missed shots until Oloffson gave UWW the lead late. The senior tallied an old fashioned three-point play that had the Warhawk faithful on their feet with UWW taking a 52-49 lead with 23.5 seconds remaining.

UW-Whitewater's defense was stifling for over 10 seconds until a Titan was able to get downhill as the shot clock wound down. The layup was good and a whistle sent UWO to the line where a free throw knotted the game 52-52 with 11.1 left. UW-Whitewater called timeout to advance the ball to the offensive end but were unable to make good on a last second opportunity to send the game into overtime.

The Warhawk offense went cold and UWO capitalized from the free throw line in the extra period leading to the final, 52-59.

Oloffson paced UWW with a career-high 17 points adding nine boards and two steals in the game. Carollo tallied a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. She added five assists and a pair of steals.
