The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team ended their uncommon losing streak with a 65-54 win over UW-Eau Claire on the road.
UW-Whitewater opened with a 4-0 lead, but UW-Eau Claire answered back with a 7-0 run. After that, UW-Whitewater regained their lead, but were unable to pull away from the Blugolds.
UW-Whitewater had a one-point edge after the first frame, but the second quarter was a similar story. UW-Eau Claire opened the quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead, but UW-Whitewater answered back slowly closing the gap. The Blugolds entered the break up by just two points.
After the break, the Blugolds held to the lead just a little bit longer until back-to-back three pointers put the Warhawks up by four. The Warhawks extended it out, outscoring the Blugolds 20-14 in the third quarter.
In the fourth frame, UWW didn't let up until the final buzzer. The Blugolds brought it within 3 points, but a 6-0 run put the Warhawks up for good.
UW-Whitewater hit the first double-digit lead of the game with just 16 seconds on the clock, playing through till the final whistle.
Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) led the Warhawks in scoring with 12 points on 6-for-7 from the floor. GIllis also pulled down 5 rebounds.
Maggie Traustch and
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) each added 11 points. Carollo had a stellar game on the glass, recording 19 rebounds for the Warhawks. Carrollo's 19 boards are a single-game career-high and are tied for 12th in Warhawk history.
Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) added in 9 points, hitting three out of four three-point attempts.
The Warhawks return home for their next contest, taking on UW-PLatteville on Wednesday, January 22nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
