The #19 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team topped UW-Platteville 67-50 in Kachel Gym Wednesday evening.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) registered her third consecutive double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Now with a career total of 759 rebounds, the senior guard moves into second in the program record book. Carollo is the first Warhawk to tally at least 750 rebounds since the 1980s. She now ranks second in UWW history in both career scoring and rebounding.
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) hit the opening bucket draining a triple off of a Carollo assist just 11 seconds in to set the tone.
Katie Hildebrandt (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) dropped in a layup following a Pioneer miscue for the quick 5-0 advantage. UW-Platteville worked to claim the lead midway through the first quarter before UWW closed the period on a 10-2 run. A
Lainee Burks (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) three sparked the spurt with Carollo drilling another from long range.
Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) capped the run with a jumper and a layup for a 19-10 lead. The Pioneers tallied the final bucket of the quarter for a seven-point margin, 19-12.
The lead was narrowed to five over the next ten minutes, but the Warhawks never relinquished the lead to head into the locker room with a 30-25 advantage.
On the other side of the break, the squads traded baskets with UWP cutting the gap to just two, 41-39, at the 4:20 mark. Carollo quickly responded with a three-pointer followed by a Gillis jumper and a Trautsch layup to quickly push the lead back to nine, 48-39. By the end of the third, the UWW lead was back to seven, 50-43.
The Warhawks began to pull away in the fourth holding a double digit lead for much of the final period.
UW-Whitewater held a massive advantage in fastbreak points, 16-2, and won the battle on the boards 41-31.
In addition to a double-double, Carollo added six assists in the game. She was 9-12 from the floor, 2-3 from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Gillis added 10 points, four rebounds, a pair of steals and a block. Hildebrandt hauled in nine boards and was a single point shy of a double-double.
The Warhawks head to La Crosse Saturday for a 3 PM tip against the Eagles.
