The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team had to battle from behind against UW-La Crosse in the opening round of the NCAA Super Regional Championship. The Warhawks closed the gap, but a 3-run first inning for the Eagles were all they needed to take Game 1.
The Warhawks were designated the away team for the first game, so
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) got things started on offense for UW-Whitewater in the top of the first, but the Eagles got out of the inning without any damage from UWW.Â
After UW-La Crosse had three runners get on base in the first four batters, the Eagles had a chance to strike first in the Super Regional. Anthony Vivan hit in the first, followed by a two-RBI single from Jack Olver. The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
For the next three innings, the game turned into a pitching battle, with the Warhawks only totaling three base runners and UW-La Crosse one.Â
In the top of the 5th, the Warhawks closed the lead after a double error play put runners on second and third with no outs. The runners would end up scoring with a sacrifice fly from
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and a RBI single from
Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port).
With the lead for UW-La Crosse cut down to just one, the Warhawks got out of some tight jams on defense to keep the game at 3-2.
The Warhawks had a few close plays in the top of the 9th, but the Eagles got the three outs they needed to close out the game.
The Warhawks and Eagles will return to Prucha Field at 11 AM for the second game of the NCAA Division III Regional.Â
