Softball Splits With Pointers

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a twinbill against UW-Stevens Point on a beautiful day at the van Steenderen Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon. Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) pitched a phenomenal opener, allowing just one hit in a 1-0 loss. The Warhawk bats got going in game two for a 4-2 win.

The sole run of the game came in the second at bat of the game. The Pointers' centerfielder launched a ball into the jet stream that drifted over the wall in left field.

The rest of the game was a pitcher's duel. UWW registered just two hits in the game -- one from Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and the other by JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove)

Anderson fanned nine in the complete game in the circle to move to 8-3 on the season.

The UW-Whitewater bats came to life in the second game blasting four homers in the team's seven hits. The Warhawks opened the scoring with Taylor Koehler's (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) oppo-blast to left center in the bottom of the second.

In the third, Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) went yard and Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) followed suit with a solo blast to left to make it a 3-0 UWW lead.

The Pointers responded in the top of the fourth using four hits to plate a pair of runs and cut the lead to 3-2.

Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) came in to pitch in the fifth sitting UWSP down in order. After two Pointers reached in the sixth, Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) came in for the final 1.2 innings retiring the final five batters of the game.

Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) gave UW-Whitewater a cushion with a RBI double in the fifth for the 4-2 final.

Kostroski and Koehler each registered two hits in game two.

Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) picked up the win allowing four hits in four innings of work while striking out four.
