The No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team dropped a twinbill at UW-La Crosse Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took game one 3-1 and game two 3-2.
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tagged a one-out single through the left side to get the offense going for UWW. She advanced to second on a groundout.
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) singled up the middle and Weidemann motored around third - Coach
Brenda Volk sending her all the way. The throw beat Weidemann to the plate, but a nifty piece of base running had the catcher waving and missing the tag as Weidemann swiped her hand on home plate for the first run of the game.
UW-La Crosse took the lead in the bottom of the frame. A series of unfortunate infield hits including a tough ball in the 5-6 hole and a grounder to short that had to go through the runner led to a pair of Eagle runs. UWL added another in the bottom of the sixth as the UWW bats went cold leading to the 3-1 final.
Wickman had two of the Warhawks' five hits in the contest.
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) went the distance in the circle allowing nine hits while striking out five. She is now 8-2 on the season.
Game two started in a similar manner - Weidemann reached with one out, this time courtesy of an Eagle miscue. After a walk, Wickman put the ball in a play and another UWL error had Weidemann coming in to score for a 1-0 UWW lead.
That score held until a bases-clearing triple for UW-La Crosse gave the Eagles a 3-1 advantage in the third.
The Warhawks responded in the top of the fourth as
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) blasted a ball that easily cleared the left field wall for a solo homer.
UWW was able to get runners on in the fifth and seventh, but was unable to bring the tying run across the plate.
Weidemann notched two of the team's five hits in the contest to lead UW-Whitewater offensively. In the circle,
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) struck out three and allowed six hits in the complete game loss. She is now even, 3-3, on the season.
