Volk Reaches 750 Career Win Milestone in UWW Sweep

Head coach Brenda Volk reached the 750 career win milestone as the Warhawk softball team swept Rockford in a twinbill at the van Steenderen Softball Complex Thursday. UWW won game one 3-1 and took the nightcap 10-6.

Volk, already the WIAC leader in career wins, is now ranked 19th in NCAA Division III history for career wins.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) registered saves in both outing Thursday bringing her season total to six. With 12 career saves, Hock broke the program record for career saves. The previous record (10) had been held by Jessica Stang since 2011.

Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) opened the scoring in the doubleheader with an RBI single down the left field line in the top of the third. Later in the frame, Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) lined a shot into the left center. The ball skipped passed a diving centerfielder for a two-RBI triple to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.

The only other run came in the fourth as the Regents used a base knock to plate a run.

Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and Wickman each tallied a pair of hits to lead the Warhawks at the plate. In the circle, Ava Kostecki (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Township) pitched the first two innings allowing a single hit. Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) came in for the next two to tally the win and move to 4-0 on the season. After two no-hit frames from Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon), Hock closed the game with a no-hit seventh for the save.

The Warhawks got on the bats in game two blasting 14 hits and scoring in four of six innings. UWW tallied four doubles in the game including back-to-back two-baggers from Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) and Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) in the second that gave UWW a 1-0 lead.

Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) doubles in the third brought in two more for a 3-0 advantage. In the fourth, Kohnle crushed a no-doubter to center field for a solo bomb and a 4-1 Warhawk lead.

Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and Wickman singles later in the fourth extended the advantage to 6-1.

After a three-run Regent homer in the fifth and another Rockford run in the sixth, the margin was cut to one, 6-5.

A pair of RBI walks and a JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) two-RBI single pushed the lead back to five before Rockford wrapped up the scoring in the seventh with a RBI base knock.

Weidemann was perfect at the dish going 4-4 to lead UWW offensively. Kostroski, Eggert and Kohnle each tallied a pair of hits in the game.

Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) picked up her first win of the season in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out three and allowed just four hits. Hock tossed the final two innings for her second save of the day.
