Softball Takes Two at Platteville

The No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team swept UW-Platteville in a doubleheader on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Warhawks blasted 12 hits en route to a 10-1, five inning win in the opener. Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) tossed a complete game one-hitter to lead UWW to a 1-0 win over the Pioneers in game two.

The Warhawks got on the board right out of the gate as Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) singled up the middle to plate the first run of the game in the top of the first. UW-Whitewater added five more on five hits in the third. Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and Wickman notched back-to-back doubles and Keira Jarrett (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) added a third double in the frame to lead the Warhawks.

In the fourth, one run came in on a passed ball before Wickman struck again. This time the crafty third baseman laid down a perfect bunt on a squeeze play. With no play at home, the Pioneers went to first but Wickman beat the throw for the bunt single to make it 8-0.

UW-Whitewater added a pair of cushion runs in the fifth with Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) posting a RBI on a fielder's choice and Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) plating one more on a single to left field.

Nine Warhawks tallied hits in the game led by Wickman's perfect 3-3 game at the dish. She added three RBI and a run scored. Kostroski posted a pair of hits with two runs scored and an RBI in the contest.

In the circle, Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) improved to 8-1 on the season with the win. She struck out six while allowing five hits in the complete game victory.

Game two was a pitchers duel. UWW was able to break the stalemate in the top of the fifth. With one out, Jarrett tagged her second double of the day. Belle Lapacek (Downers Grove, Ill./South) came in to run for Jarrett on second while Anderson stepped to the plate in a pinch hit role. She laced a shot to right field that scored the speedy Lapacek easily for the 1-0 lead.

With the lead in hand, Dick and Warhawk defense allowed just a single baserunner in the final three innings of the game.

Kostroski, Wickman, Jarrett, Anderson and Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) all registered hits in the game including doubles from Kostroski and Jarrett.

Dick tossed a gem and the defense was there in support. The senior struck out one while allowing a single Pioneer hit in the complete game shutout in the circle.
