Thies with Grand Slam in Warhawks win over Carthage

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team added their 24th win (8th straight) on the season with a 16-4 7 inning victory over Carthage.

The Warhawks opened up scoring right away in the second inning. The 8-run inning was capped off with an Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) grand slam (his 6th of the season), putting the Warhawks up 8-0. In the fourth inning, Thies batted in another run, giving the Warhawks a 9-0 lead. Thies finished with a career-high five RBIs in the game.

The Firebirds scored their first run in the fifth, ending the shut-out, but the Warhawks responded with a 7-run inning. Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) started things off with a 2-RBI double, with Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) hitting another 2 RBI single only a few batters later. The inning was capped off by Charlie Bogue (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) hitting a 2 RBI double, giving the Warhawks a 16-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Carthage managed to get a few more runs on board, but it wasn't enough to cut into the deficit, with UW-Whitewater taking the game in only 7 innings.

Thies led the Warhawks on offense with his 5 RBIs, going 2-for-2 from the plate. Koenig added 3 RBIs of his own, with Paden and Bogue each earning 2.

Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) picked up the win on the mound, only allowing three hits in his 5.0 innings pitched. Ethan Wickman (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) came in as the reliever, striking out 3 of the four outs he played.

The Warhawks will be back out tomorrow, to finish up their conference series against UW-Platteville. UWW will head to Platteville tomorrow, with the first pitch slated for 1 PM.
