The No. 16 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team captured a pair of wins in the team's home-opener Friday. The Warhawks topped Carroll 3-0 and 5-1 to remain unbeaten on the season, 12-0.
UWW tallied the first run of the day courtesy of a pair of Pioneer miscues.
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) led off the bottom of the third with a single to center field.
JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Koehler to second.
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) followed with a grounder in the hole that was fielded by the shortstop. An errant throw bounced passed the first baseman as Koehler took off for third. The first baseman attempted to get Koehler sliding into third but the throw caromed into left field allowing the first run of the game to cross home.
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) added to the total with a RBI single to right center in the next at bat to bring in Dunning.
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) tagged a one-out blast to left field in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-0 UWW lead.
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) led UWW at the plate with a 2-3 game in the batter's box.
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) shutout the Pioneers allowing just two hits in the complete game win in the circle. The powerful righty fanned six to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Carroll struck first in the nightcap using a three-hit first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Warhawk defense and pitching staff allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
The Warhawks responded in the bottom of the second.
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) sparked the inning with a leadoff single down the left field line. Koehler drew a walk and
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) added another single down the left field line to load the bases.
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) launched a ball to left field that hung in the air for a sacrifice fly to knot the game 1-1.
The flood gates opened in the fifth as UWW plated four runs in the frame. Kohnle laced a ball to left field that cleared fence in left. Dunning tagged a ball to right center that hit the wall under the scoreboard for a one-out double. Weidemann followed with a two-run blast to centerfield for her first collegiate homer. The final run came across on a Wickman double to left field.
Offensively, UW-Whitewater had nine hits in game two led by a 2-3 game from Wickman.
Cleveland allowed three hits, all in the first inning, while striking out one in the first four innings of the game.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) went the final three innings, striking out three for her fourth win of the season.
