The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team tallied two wins on Tuesday to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Warhawks had the offense rolling in a 7-3 win over Amherst before
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) tossed a two-hit gem in a 1-0 win over Endicott.
UWW blasted 12 hits in the first game including three for extra bases as the wind played a factor in the contest. The first run of the game came on a wild pitch in the top of the first.
Amherst responded to knot the game 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. The Warhawks doubled up in the top of the third.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) reached on a one-out fielder's choice and swiped second.
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) launched a high pop up that wasn't handled by the Amherst second baseman as Eggert cruised around to score.
UWW rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) sparked the burst with a single down the right field line and
Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) followed with a hard hit single to right center.
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) laced a double to left center that brought in two more and came in to score on
Kaitlyn Weidemann's (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) single up the middle to give the Warhawks a 5-1 advantage.
Each team added a pair to their totals over the next 3.5 innings for the final.
Four Warhawks registered multiple hits in the game led by Dunning's 2-3 game at the plate. Both of her hits went for doubles as she plated two and scored two runs in the game.
Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) picked up her second win in the circle while
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) tallied her second save of the season.
Anderson tossed an absolute gem in the nightcap throwing a complete game two-hitter while fanning ten in her second win of the season.
The Warhawks had offensive opportunities early in the contest getting a runner into scoring position three of the first four innings but were unable to break the stalemate until the fifth. Dunning led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a groundout. With one out,
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) reached on catcher's interference to put runners on the corners.
In the next at bat, Kostroski fake bunted while Ward took off toward second to start a pickle. Dunning perfectly read the catcher's throw going all the way down to second and bolted for the plate safely sliding in for the 1-0 lead. That was all UWW would need.
Endicott had a two-out single in the sixth but Anderson struck out the next batter. In the seventh, Anderson fanned the bookends on a 1-2-3 frame to secure the win.
Six Warhawks registered hits in the game including doubles from
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo), Anderson and Dunning and a triple from Kostroski.
