The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team improved to 8-0 on the season with two afternoon wins Thursday. The Warhawks opened the day with a 5-1 win over Manchester before topping Bates 10-1.
UWW was rolling right off the bat -- plating three runs in the bottom of the first in the day's opener.
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) took one for the team in the leadoff spot and
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) capitalized with a double to left field that had Weidemann cruising around the bases to score. An errant throw to home on the play saw the ball carom around the backstop as Kostroski also came in to score. Later in the frame,
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) drove in
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) on a RBI single up the middle for a 3-0 lead.
Weidemann laced a double to left center to plate another run in the fourth and came around to score on a throwing error two batters later to extend the margin to 5-0.
Manchester scored a single run in the seventh for the final.
Weidemann was 2-2 with a RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff position to pace the Warhawks at the plate.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) went the distance scatting four hits across seven innings while fanning five for her first win of the season.
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) opened the scoring in the nightcap with a RBI single to left center that brought in Weidemann. Kostroski registered a sacrifice fly later in the inning that scored Ward for a 2-0 first inning advantage.
In the second, Weidemann brought in another with a single down the left field line to make it 3-0.
Bates got on the board in the third on a first-and-third pickle steal situation. The Warhawks were able to tag the runner between first and second out but not quite before the run from third had touched home.
The flood gates opened for the UWW offense in the top of the sixth as the Warhawks scored seven runs on six hits in the frame. UW-Whitewater scored on a
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) single to center, a double steal that saw
Belle Lapacek (Downers Grove, Ill./South) sliding safely in at the plate, a squeeze play that Dunning beat the throw to home on, a Ward infield single, a Kostroski single to left center, a
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) double to left field and a RBI groundout from
Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon).
Four Warhawks tallied multiple hits in the game led by Ward's 3-4 game at the dish. She added a RBI and two runs scored. Weidemann,
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and Koehler each added a pair of hits as UWW belted 13 in the contest.
In the circle,
Ava Kostecki (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Township) picked up the win. She no-hit Bates in 1.1 innings of work.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) registered her third save of the season allowing a single hit in the final 1.2 innings of work.
